“ORWO was the GDR’s largest female business with a workforce that was over 50% female […] and is still cited enthusiastically today as proof of women’s equality in the East. In their performance ‘Tyrannosaurus Regina’, the artistic collective hannsjana scratch away at this myth in very humorous fashion by mixing the theme of East German feminism with the apparently disparate – and primarily male – fascination with dinosaurs.” Eva Berendt, Theater heute, August/September 2024
At first glance, the women’s movement in the GDR and the dinosaurs have absolutely nothing in common – apart from the fact that though both no longer exist, their former existence is still felt today. However, the artists of the company hannsjana establish an ingenious and playful connection between the two. Equipped with headphones, the audience sets off on an excavation tour with performative interventions, in which the exposure of layer upon layer of historical remains also raises questions about East and West German narratives of feminism and patriarchal tales.
